7 tips on how to be efficient working from home

The Coronavirus pandemic requires employees to efficiently carry out their tasks from home. Working from home is a flexible way to deal with day to day responsibilities. It is also challenging and requires discipline and excellent time management. Even though the trend of working from home has been on for decades, it is still a completely new concept for many. Here are our tips on how to be efficient from the 'home office'.

1. Build a workspace or study at home

The first step in your new lifestyle is to set up a designated area only for work. This could be an unused, quiet corner, a spare bedroom or a dedicated desk in your living room. This area needs to be converted a 'working space' where you can switch on your working mode with the least destruction as possible. Keep only essentials here: your laptop, scanner and office supplies. Be sure it is quiet, so you can focus on what's important.

2. Transfer your commute time to intentional rest time

Undoubtedly, one of the best thing about working from home is being able to avoid morning traffic or unpleasantly packed public transport. Use this extra time to rest. This is the perfect time to detach from work and focus on your needs. Sleep an hour longer, go for a walk or take your time to prepare a nourishing breakfast.

3. Set real work hours

Now your home office is set up, it is time to get down to business. Literally. Set specific working hours to do your tasks. Take a free time management course or keep reading about time efficiency. The beauty of working from home is that you are flexible and can work whenever it is convenient for you.

4. Remove distractions and set schedule for distraction

What are your distractions around you? Is it social media, or the urgent need to clean the bathroom or is it noise? If so, there is an app to block your social media for certain hours. If the untidiness of your environment is bothering you, make sure you clean up before your working hours. If it is distracting noise, use headphones to help you focus. Listening to classical music can be a real help.

5. Don't work in your pyjamas

'Dress for success' isn't just a corporate catchphrase. It matters what you wear, even if you don't leave the house. If you work in your pyjamas, that will simply kill your productivity. Wearing the right clothes will get you in the right mindset. You will also be ready for any kind of video chats or check-ins with teammates.

6. Exercise and stretch regularly

Try the Pomodoro Technique. It is a time management system that encourages people to work with the time they have efficiently. Using this method, you break your workday into 25-minute chunks separated by five-minute breaks. Do stretching or burpees during your breaks. After about four Pomodoro, you take a longer break for about 15 to 20 minutes, when you can go for a long walk around the block. This technique will keep you fit and productive.

7. Create a reward system

We all love rewards and often we reward ourselves with food. It is important to keep a well balanced, healthy diet while working from home. It is advised to remove all the junk from your cupboard and replace them with healthy snacks. Although, there are other ways to reward yourself. Pick a film you want to watch after work; buy a new book and enjoy a relaxing evening. Although it seems simple, using a basic rewards system will help you get things done and make you feel fulfilled.
